Patients facing life-threatening illness may have many concerns about their future needs and care. Enabling a discussion of advance care planning (ACP) might facilitate an increase in openness between patients, their families and professionals. This study is being carried out as a phase 2 feasibility trial to pilot an advance care planning discussion derived from phase 1 work (Barnes et al, 2007). The study is a patient preference Randomised Controlled Trial. Up to 20 patients will be able to choose either the ACP discussion or usual care. The remaining 60 patients will be randomised.
