Community-based evaluation of ‘Preferred Place of Care’ in the North West of England

Grant Holder: Dr Mary Turner, Lancashire & South Cumbria Cancer Services Network
Principal Investigator: Dr Iris Cohen Fineberg, Lancaster University
Funder: Research for Patient Benefit (RfPB) programme, NIHR, Department of Health
Time scale: October 2008 – November 2010.

Summary of the project

There are two main aims of this evaluation research study. The first aim is to understand the experiences of patients and care professionals who have used PPC in order to explore such elements as how easy it is to use and how helpful it is to patients. The second aim of the research is to understand barriers that keep patients and care professionals from using PPC. This is a mixed-methods study. Phase One will use qualitative interviews to investigate the experiences of health care practitioners (district nurses, community matrons), family members and patients who have and have not used PPC. The second phase of the study will be a quantitative survey to gather information from a broader range of the North West population to find out how the findings of the first phase relate to the experiences of the wider population. Results of the research will be used to improve PPC and check the revised version with patients, with the goal of helping to improve end of life care for patients and families in the UK.
